Mod of the Month - August 2009

With the summer for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere now at an end, it's time to reflect on what our modding community has achieved over the last few months. Hopefully you've had a nice dry summer. It's not been too bad here in the UK and I've been working on a Lian Li V2000 I acquired a few months ago, cutting some holes in the side panels and one in the roof for a reservoir.

However, August's Mod of the Month nominees are something else and put my efforts to shame. We've got two cases made of wood (no suprises that a certain slipperyskip is behind one of those), one of the most compact water-cooled PCs we've seen and the rest of the mods this month range from the bizarre to the bold, and on to the brilliant!

We don't just have Mod of the Month though, don't forget to check out our modding section regularly on bit-tech where we'll showcase many of the best mods around with in-depth walkthroughs from the makers themselves.

There's also been no better time to visit our modding forums which are bulging with new content and include all manner of mods and scratch builds. Big and small, air cooled and water-cooled, acrylic, wood and aluminium - it's all there.

Our new sponsor for Mod of the Month is Quiet PC who joined the team last month. They'll be giving the winner the choice of one of these three great prizes every month:

Scythe Kama Connect 2 USB2.0 IDE and SATA External Adapter

The Scythe Kama Connect 2 is an incredibly handy gadget designed to allow you to connect SATA and IDE hard drives quickly and easily to any PC using USB. It is compatible with both 3.5in and 2.5in SATA and IDE hard drives, as well as any other IDE device such as an optical drive. The ability to quickly plug-and-play any hard drive gives you a quick and easy way to access your files or transfer them from one drive to another without needing to open up your PC.

Scythe Mugen 2 Quiet CPU Cooler

This processor cooler is an example of Japanese engineering at its finest! Scythe’s Mugen 2 Quiet CPU Cooler is designed with five fin towers for improved processor cooling by up to 7 degrees C compared with the original Mugen, which itself was one of the best on the market. As you would expect, it is multi-socket compatible for Intel and AMD and comes with full instructions.

Zalman ZM-MFC1 Plus Black Multi Fan Controller

Zalman's ZM-MFC1 PLUS is a very simple fan controller which supports up to six 3-pin fans. This provides the user with total control of the installed fans. Each channel is capable of altering the supplied voltage from 5V to 11V, with 5V able to quieten even the loudest of fans. As well as a reduction in noise, lowering the voltage a fan receives also reduces the airflow, so make sure you keep an eye on the temperatures inside the system.

So it's a huge thanks to Quiet PC, well done to all the nominees last month. It was one of the closest competitions we've had here on bit-tech with just two votes seperating first and second place. Third place was also hotly contended but in the end it was Alu-Tech's The Beast of CHE which took the top spot. All the projects have moved on a fair bit since then so make sure you check out their work logs for the latest amazing pictures.
