Dolby provides first look at new Dolby Mobile with full multichannel audio play out, and debut for new LG handsets
Barcelona, 15 February, 2010—At the 2010 GSMA Mobile World Congress, Dolby Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE: DLB), is showcasing the next version of its Dolby® Mobile technology that is set to bring discrete 5.1 multichannel audio to mobile handsets. It is also introducing its professional preprocessing and encoding tool, Dolby Media Generator, which, when combined with Dolby Mobile equipped handsets, provides the ability to deliver a true end-to-end solution for mobile entertainment.
Continuing its successful collaboration with LG Electronics, Dolby will also be presenting some of the latest LG handsets to feature the current, Meffy Award–winning Dolby Mobile technology, including the much-anticipated LG Mini GD880, LG’s new trendsetting model for 2010, scheduled for European release in March.
Located at booth C43 in Hall One of the Fira de Barcelona, Dolby is inviting visitors to enter the Dolby dome, where they can experience first-hand how the company is helping to enable a new era in mobile entertainment. Currently featured in handsets from manufacturers LG, Sharp, Fujitsu, and Lenovo, Dolby Mobile has elevated the entertainment experience on mobile devices. The next version of Dolby Mobile being showcased for the first time at Mobile World Congress takes that quality audio experience a stage further.
“Dolby Mobile is designed to give consumers a rich, full-impact audio experience for movies, videos, and music,” said Rolf Schmitz, Marketing Director, Mobile, Dolby Laboratories. “The next version of Dolby Mobile adds an extra dimension by including Dolby Digital Plus technology, enabling realistic surround sound for headphone playback, as well as genuine 5.1-channel surround sound playback on home entertainment setups from the mobile device via HDMI.”
The inclusion of Dolby Digital Plus decoding in the next version of Dolby Mobile adds to an already impressive feature set, which includes Dolby Pulse decoding for optimum experience of over-the-air content; Sound Space Expander; Natural Bass; High-Frequency Enhancer; Mono-to-Stereo Creator; Sound Level Controller; and Graphic EQ.
Dolby’s commitment to improving the mobile entertainment experience every step of the way is reinforced by the introduction of Dolby Media Generator, a highly efficient set of tools that enables content owners, aggregators, and distributors to format content for mobile consumption. It optimizes content for more reliable and efficient delivery, lower storage requirements, higher playback quality—and a richer consumer experience.
“With its powerful encoding and metadata capabilities, Dolby Media Generator gives the ability to deliver a true end-to-end industry solution for the mobile content supply chain,” said Rolf Schmitz. “It is the one solution that provides compatibility with more than 800 legacy handset models. By supporting Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Media Generator will also bring enhanced, full multichannel entertainment to devices with the next version of Dolby Mobile technology, as well as to other multichannel devices that support Dolby Digital Plus.”
Dolby Media Generator also provides automatic validation and repair of source media to optimize quality control, and adds a choice of metadata for better content discovery, as well as more accurate tracking, reporting, and file presentation. Advanced compression algorithms ensure that production values are maintained, along with high content quality and integrity across the entire creation and distribution chain, providing rich, unsurpassed entertainment delivery to mobile users.
“Dolby Media Generator is the ideal tool for content owners, aggregators, and distributors to process content for existing devices in the market. And it is the ultimate companion for Dolby Mobile,” said Rolf Schmitz.
The global collaboration between LG and Dolby has seen multiple LG handsets released featuring the current Dolby Mobile. LG’s latest device, the LG Mini GD880, is being unveiled for the first time at Mobile World Congress and is available to view at the Dolby booth.
“We are delighted to give visitors to the Dolby booth a first glimpse of the exciting new LG Mini touch screen phone, which delivers an exhilarating Dolby Mobile surround sound experience for video content and enhanced music enjoyment. Our alliance with LG continues to go from strength to strength and we are proud to be working with LG to enhance the mobile media experience for its customers,” continued Schmitz.
