Samsung has announced the launch of the world's largest capacity 2.5" solid-state drive with a whopping 15.36TB of storage space, but if you're hoping to upgrade your laptop you will be disappointed to hear the company is targeting enterprise storage systems.
First announced back in August last year and now available to the company's enterprise customers, the Samsung PM1633a boasts a 15.36TB unformatted capacity in a standard 2.5" form factor. The drive's impressive capacity comes from the company's 3D V-NAND technology: 256Gb 48-layer V-NAND memory chips are stacked 16 high to form 512GB packages, of which 32 are then installed within the drive's housing. The drives also include 16GB of DRAM as cache, and offers a claimed sequential read and write speed of 1,200MB/s with at 200,000 input-output operations per second (IOPS) read and 32,000 IOPS write.
If all that sounds like something you want to get your hands on, be warned: aside from being extremely expensive, the enterprise-oriented drive uses a 12Gb/s SAS interface designed for high-density high-performance storage applications - meaning it's not exactly a drop-in replacement for your average laptop hard drive, even if it is the same form factor.
'
To satisfy an increasing market need for ultra-high-capacity SAS SSDs from leading enterprise storage system manufacturers, we are directing our best efforts toward meeting our customers’ SSD requests,' claimed Samsung's Jung-bae Lee at the launch. '
We will continue to lead the industry with next-generation SSDs, using our advanced 3D V-NAND memory technology, in order to accelerate the growth of the premium memory market while delivering greater performance and efficiency to our customers.'
While the 15.36TB drive, which knocks previous record-holder Fixstars'
13TB model into a cocked hat, is Samsung's first launch in the range, the company has confirmed plans to follow up with 7.68TB, 3.84TB, 1.92TB, 960GB, and 480GB models later this year. Pricing for all models is, naturally, available solely on application to Samsung.
