Network-attached storage specialist QNAP has announced the launch of a new entry in its Turbo NAS family: the Intel Celeron-based TS-251C Turbo NAS.
Designed for home and small office use, the TS-215C is powered by a 2.41GHz Intel Celeron dual-core processor coupled to 1GB of DDR3L memory and a gigabit Ethernet port. Using QNAP's own Linux-based operating system, the company claims the device can handle up to 112MB/s throughput even with encryption enabled - taking advantage, no doubt, of the AES-NI acceleration available in the processor of choice.
The TS-251C is a dual-bay NAS supporting 3.5" SATA hard drives, and includes a single USB 3.0 port for future expansion. Two USB 2.0 ports are also included, which comes in handy for a keyboard and mouse when using the surprising-in-a-NAS HDMI output - the latter allowing media playback via the Kodi application, formerly known as XBMC, without needing a further client device and supporting an optional IR remote control. The media support makes further use of the Celeron processor by allowing real-time transcoding of media, converting videos and audio to whatever resolution and format is best suited to a particular connecting client.
'The TS-251C is the ideal choice for users to quickly create a secure personal space for file storage, backup, synchronisation and multimedia,' claimed Jason Hsu, product manager of QNAP, at the unveiling. 'It comes with a surprising price tag that offers an incredible choice for budget-concerned users that want the best possible performance.'
UK pricing for the NAS has yet to be confirmed but should be significantly lower than the £275 hot-swap TS-251 on which it is based, with the loss of the hot-swap drive bays and upgradeable RAM. More details are available on the official website.
