Fiscally troubled manufacturer OCZ has announced a deal which it hopes will convince buyers to pick up one of its lucrative Vector solid-state drives (SSDs) - a free copy of Far Cry 3.
Echoing AMD's recent bundling of
relatively new-release titles with selected models of graphics cards, OCZ is hoping to boost sales by offering a copy of the
well-received Far Cry 3 with every purchase of a 256GB or 512GB OCZ Vector solid-state drive. Those buying the cheaper 128GB model will find that they, sadly, are not important enough customers to be included in the deal.
There are a few other caveats of which to be aware, too: the download code is valid only until the 14th of July, and is limited to two claims per customer regardless of how many SSDs you buy. The offer is also geographically limited, with the UK, the rest of Europe, the US, Canada, South America, the Middle East and most of Asia covered but - for reasons not disclosed by OCZ - Africa and China excluded. Users will also have to provide a valid serial number for each drive, along with the software key for the bundled copy of the Acronis drive imaging software - a neat way of limiting the deal to valid customers only.
The Vector family of SSDs is the first from OCZ to be powered by its
in-house Indilinx controllers since the company was acquired by OCZ back in 2011. Dubbed Barefoot 3, the controller promises high endurance and impressive performance figures of 550MB/s read and 530MB/s write. OCZ's claims certainly seem to be held up
in our testing, which saw the Vector set the bar for other SSD makers to beat.
The success of the Vector line is critical for the survival of OCZ. Since
leaving the DRAM market in 2011, the company has been concentrating on its more lucrative SSD product ranges. Stiff competition and some reliability issues have taken their toll on the company, however, with the result that it has been
missing revenue projections and
trimming product lines and headcount in order to stay afloat.
Should the Vector flop, OCZ could be in real trouble.
Details of how to claim a copy of Far Cry 3 are available on the
OCZ website.
