Memory maker Mushkin has announced the impending launch of a new family of 2.5" solid-state drives (SSDs), dubbed the Striker family, featuring read and write performance up to 565MB/s and 550MB/s respectively.
Unveiled by the company at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this week in Las Vegas, the Mushkin Striker SSDs are based around a Phison PS31110-S10 quad-core eight-channel flash controller - a departure from the Silicon Motion SM2246EN used in the company's Reactor family late last year. As well as all the usual features - 256-bit AES encryption, end-to-end data path protection, ECC, refresh, and flush facilities - the new controller appears to offer a higher throughput, boosting the new model to 565MB/s and 550MB/s read and write from the Reactor's 560MB/s and 460MB/s throughput.
'Mushkin is committed to giving our customers the best performing and most reliable SSDs and our new Striker family of drives delivers,' claimed Mushkin's Brian Flood at the unveiling. 'With an ever-increasing demand for greater performance, the new Striker drives provides the ultimate combination of speed and reliability for today’s demanding applications.'
The Striker SSD family, to launch in the first quarter of this year in 240GB to 960GB capacities, includes a SATA 3.0 interface, full support for TRIM, DevSleep support for reduced power consumption, and a 7mm 2.5" form-factor suitable for use in most laptops. The company is also making much of its 120-bit per 2KB error checking and correction strength, and the use of high-speed multi-level cell (MLC) NAND flash.
Pricing and UK availability for the Mushkin Striker family has yet to be confirmed, but expect to pay a premium over the company's existing product lines for the privilege of improved performance.
