Mushkin has announced the launch of a 1TB 2.5" solid-state drive with claimed performance of 560MB/s read and 460MB/s write: the Mushkin Reactor.
Based on a slim 7mm 2.5" form factor - making it suitable for most laptops as well as desktops - the Mushkin Reactor features the Silicon Motion SM2246EN flash controller for manufacturer-claimed throughput of 560MB/s read and 460MBs write and random 4K performance of 74,000 read and 76,000 write input-output operations per second (IOPS). Combined with its impressive 1TB capacity, and it's clear that Mushkin is positioning the new Reactor at the top of its range.
Featuring a SATA 3.0 interface, the drive's controller comes packed with a full buzzword bingo of features: DevSleep is designed to reduce idle power consumption to ultra-low levels to increase battery life in mobile devices; DataRefresh and EarlyRetirement combine to improve data integrity, the latter by keeping a larger cache of spare blocks and retiring suspected bad blocks earlier than most drives, while Optimised Data Flow appears to exist as little more than a branding than a discernible technology.
To keep the data flowing as fast as possible, Mushkin's Reactor includes 1GB of DDR3 memory to act as a data cache - although whether this will make up for the relatively limited write performance compared to competing devices such as the Samsung 840 EVO remains to be seen. One thing is clear: Mushkin is certainly planning to compete on price. The company has confirmed a $399.99 recommended retail price in the US (around £255 excluding taxes), making it cheaper than the RRP of its direct competition.
UK pricing and availability for the Mushkin Reactor has yet to be confirmed, with more details available on the
official product page.
