Network storage specialist Drobo has announced a new entry in its range, a five-bay direct-attached storage (DAS) box featuring Thunderbolt 2 and USB 3.0 connectivity - instead, oddly, of the latest Thunderbolt 3 and USB 3.1.
Designed to be connected to a single host PC - from which it can be shared over a network if desired - the new Drobo 5D Turbo is claimed to be built for performance: as well as its five drive bays, the DAS box comes equipped with a pre-installed 128GB mSATA SSD card which is used to store commonly-accessed files using Drobo's Hot Data Cache technology - offering, the company claims, a 30 per cent speed boost for video streaming and a three-fold improvement in read performance when using applications such as Adobe Lightroom with files stored on the DAS drives.
Another change over the older Drobo 5D, which the 5D Turbo is designed to replace, is in its support for connecting 4K monitors - further cementing Drobo's focus on media creation professionals as its target market. The DAS units can also be daisy-chained up to six strong for a total of 240TB of storage space using the company's BeyondRAID technology.
The Drobo 5D Turbo is available now from Drobo's web store priced at $899, with UK pricing and availability yet to be confirmed by the company.
