The good news: the first PC-based Blu-Ray drives will be arriving in the UK in March. The bad news: they're only going to be available in Sony PCs.
The Register is reporting that the PCs will cost around £1800, and we be designed to appeal to video editors. This is because the Blu-Ray drive isn't just a player, it's a recorder too. It will be able to store 25GB of data on a single disk.
The machine will come with 600GB of storage - we can't help but feel that in a super-duper-high-end machine like this, 1TB would have been nice, especially given the video editing angle.
Blu-Ray discs will be selling into the market at the same time, and will cost around £10 a pop.
There's no word on when we can get standalone drives, although we know they're ready. We've talked to manufacturers, and they're just waiting on the finalisation of copy protection. We're not sure what graphics card this PC is going to sport, but we darned well hope it will have HDCP security, to support next generation discs - otherwise, you'll end up with a PC that will record to Blu-Ray, but won't play any commercial disks. That would be rather stupid. We can also pray that it includes some kind of graphics hardware capable of H.264 decoding.
Would you stump up £1800 just to be the first on the block with a drive? For us, the rest of the PC specification is critical, and we're not 100% sure that Sony is going to get it right. What are your thoughts? Let us know what you think in the forum.
