Sony has announced its first stand-alone PC drive for Blu-ray recording.
It comes in at $750, which is a little cheaper than the $1000-ish that Benq wants for its first writer. The Sony model number is BWU-100A, and it should be available to buy at the end of this month.
Unlike the Benq, it's a standard PATA drive, which will leave those upgrading to cutting edge systems (without PATA) out in the cold. The drive supports dual layer media (with up to 50GB capacity) and there's full support for AACS protected content playback, providing you've got a suitable monitor and graphics card with HDCP support.
Sony's PC drive release comes as its consumer offering sits in limbo. The under-the-TV Sony player has been delayed, some think to make sure there are enough drives available for the PlayStation 3 to utilise.
