Despite the free upgrade period ending last weekend, Windows 7 and 8.1 users can still upgrade to Windows 10 without paying anything.

A loophole has been discovered that allows users with activated copies of Windows 7 or 8.1 to masquerade as an 'assistive technology user' and receive a free upgrade.

At the moment, there's no deadline either, with the website stating a deadline has not been announced, but with Microsoft saying, 'we will make a public announcement prior to ending the offer.'

Assistive technologies are programs and hardware that enhance vision, hearing, speech, mobility, learning or language and not necessarily limited to those that are included with Windows.

The only stipulation as far as we can see is that your current hardware is compatible - there's otherwise an easy-to-get download that will begin the Windows 10 upgrade by grabbing the 3GB of download files.

Windows 10 currently tops the Steam Hardware Survey charts as the most popular OS and has gained ground every month since launch. It currently stands at 21 percent market share, with Windows 7 currently at 47 percent.

In January this year, according to Netmarketshare.com, Windows 7 enjoyed a 52 percent market share, with Windows 10 on just 12 percent.
