Earlier this month, Scan announced that it had opened a new and much bigger retail store front. Late last week, we took to the roads and headed north to Bolton to see the company’s new facilities.
Upon arrival, we were greeted with tea and biscuits in the new and vastly-improved shop front before being subjected to an hour of PowerPointery and then being given a guided tour of both the store front and the new, expanded warehouse.
What we saw was impressive and things have moved forwards dramatically since the last time we visited the retailer’s headquarters almost a year ago to the day.
Scan owns several warehouses off site and it will still continue to use these facilities to hold overstocked items, but what it has done is effectively double its on-site warehouse space. The importance of that is that it is where all of the order picking happens and more space means more orders can be satisfied in the same amount of time.
The company’s representatives said that, once the construction and re-organisation is finished, it will enable Scan to push back its cut off times for next-day delivery. We’ve heard various times from several different employees, but what looks very likely at the moment is that Scan will aim to ship all orders placed before 3pm for next day delivery.

With all of this expansion in mind, Scan’s horizons are starting to broaden. Elan Raja III, Director of Scan Computers, confirmed the retailer’s move to cater for Irish PC enthusiasts. He said he is expecting to start taking orders from across the Irish Sea sometime in September, although he didn’t confirm if Scan’s complementary free shipping for bit-tech community members on orders above £25 would apply.

Raja also talked about expanding even further into mainland Europe at a later date, but that’s still very much in the early stages – it’s nevertheless something to keep an eye on in the future.
