Valve has announced the next logical step in its hardware product launches: accessories, including game-themed skins, for your Steam Controller.
Unveiled
back in 2013 and the subject of
more than one redesign and
delay, the Steam Controller has proven a popular accessory for PC gamers. Featuring strange concave touch-sensitive control surfaces, Valve's Steam Controller can be configured to act like a traditional gamepad for console-style games while also, the company claims, offering a real and usable alternative to keyboard and mouse for traditional PC-style games. While it's not to everyone's tastes, the Steam Controller's sales have been solid and now Valve is looking to cash in with some accessories.
Launched late last night, the headline entry for Valve's Steam Controller accessories - available at around a third off as a launch offer - is a range of stick-on skins themed around the company's games. Variants available at launch are an Aperture Science skin from the Portal series and choices of blue camouflage, grey camouflage, and blue-and-orange skins from Counter Strike: Global Offensive. Matching skins are also available for the company's Steam Link streaming box, to continue the theme.
Additional accessories now available include a carrying case for the Steam Controller, a replacement battery door with a cut-out designed to hold the wireless receiver dongle, and a spare or replacement wireless receiver. All are available now from the
official store page for immediate shipping.
The accessories are priced at £8.99 per skin, £17.99 for the carry case, £8.99 for the battery door, and £11.99 for the wireless dongle; the launch discount brings these down to £6.29, £12.59, £6.29 and £8.39 respectively, or a four-piece bundle featuring the battery door, wireless dongle, carry case, and the Aperture controller skin can be had for £30.20.
