Razer has announced the launch of a sort-of-new family of peripherals for PC gamers: the Razer Classic Series, which brings back the days when blue LEDs were all the rage.
Modders and gamers of a certain age will remember the days when the most common mod was to desolder the LEDs of a keyboard and replace them with the at-the-time shiny new ultra-bright blue variants that had recently hit the market. Manufacturers, naturally, spotted the trend and began offering blue LEDs as standard in many of their enthusiast-grade products. After a while, the cost of blue LEDs dropped to the point where manufacturers standardised on them for all their devices, even at the very lowest end of the market - after which they largely fell out of favour.
Now, Razer is looking to bring back the glory days of eye-searing blue lights with the Razer Classic Series. 'In order to pay homage to our origins and the fans who’ve been through it all,' Razer co-founder and chief executive Ming-Liang Tan explained at the unveiling, 'our Razer Classic products with blue LED backlighting commemorate a time when Razer first made its mark in the gaming world.'
The Razer Classic family is comprised of tweaked variants of the BlackWidow Ultimate gaming keyboard, DeathAdder and Naga MMO gaming mice, Tartarus gaming keypad and Kraken 7.1 gaming headset. Each differentiates itself with the use of blue LED lighting, the colour of Razer's launch products before it adopted glowing green as its official theme.
The Classic range isn't just about swapping out a few LEDs, however. The range, which is to be made available exclusively through Razer's own web shop, packs a freebie in with each model while tweaking their internals to better reflect the current state-of-the-art. The DeathAdder Classic, to begin, upgrades to the latest fourth-generation infra-red sensor and adds rubber side grips missing from the original 2006 design, and comes with a free Goliathus Medium gaming mat. The Naga Classic includes the same mat, while the BlackWidow Ultimate Classic comes with a bundled keyboard bag. The Kraken 7.1 Classic packs a free headphone stand, while the Tartarus finishes the range out with a bundled Goliathus gaming surface and a revised form factor promising improved comfort over its original incarnation.
