If you're in the market for a Windows 10 gadget, you may want to hang on to your money for a little while longer: Microsoft has announced a press event on the 6th of October with 'some exciting news to share about Windows 10 devices.'
Microsoft's Windows 10 operating system is, despite privacy concerns surrounding its default settings, proving popular. The software is seeing around twice the adoption rate of previous-generation releases, doubtless aided by Microsoft's - somewhat forceful - free upgrade offer for users of Windows 7 and higher, and this weekend surpassed Apple's OS X in market share according to browser-watcher Statcounter. Coupled with increased interest for its Surface family of tablets, which proved a slow burner for the company, things are going well.
It's no surprise, then, to find that Microsoft is looking to keep the momentum going. The company has invited press to a conference on the 6th of October in which it claims it has '
some exciting news to share about Windows 10 devices.' The invite is short on details, but the company is expected to unveil more information about its upcoming Windows 10-specific product launches, including a successor for the Surface 3 and Surface Pro 3 tablets.
Previous rumours have pointed to an early October unveiling for the Surface Pro 4, alongside two Lumia-branded Windows Mobile 10 handsets: the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950XL. Recently, notorious smartphone leaker Evan Blass claimed in a piece for
WMPoweruser that the devices would be unveiled on the 10th of October.
The invitation comes as Microsoft's Mike Ybarra shared information about how the company's Xbox One console will receive Windows 10 functionality. Speaking on the
Major Nelson podcast, Ybarra claimed that the Xbox One will be upgraded to a highly-customised version of Windows 10 dubbed One Core - apparently without realising quite what that name sounds like with certain accents.
