Compacting computing specialist Shuttle has announced a new entry-level bare-bones system designed for Intel Haswell LGA-1150 processors and measuring just 19cm tall.
The Shuttle SH81R4, to give the design its proper title, measures 325mm x 215mm x 190mm, giving it an internal capacity of around 13 litres and an overall weight of 3.4kg. Built around black anodised aluminium, the chassis features a customisable mylar front panel which can be replaced with the owner's own graphics, text, logo or even a photograph. A built-in 300W power supply is included, promising 80 PLUS Bronze certification and a single six-pin PCIe power connector in addition to four SATA, two four-pin Molex, and one floppy power connector.
The bundled motherboard, a proprietary design, packs an Intel Lynx Point H81 chipset with support for fourth-generation Haswell processors with thermal design profiles (TDP) up to 95W. Sadly for those eager to squeeze extra power out of the diminutive box, the unlocked multiplier of K-series chips is not supported. The processor's heat output is tamed by Shuttles Integrated Cooling Engine (ICE), a custom heatsink with bundled 92mm fan and various noise-reduction features. Two memory slots support DDR3-1600 DIMMs of up to 8GB, while a pair of full-size PCI Express slots - one 16-lane v3 and one open-ended one-lane v2 - are joined by two mini-PCIe slots, one half-size and one full-size.
Additional features of the board include Realtek on-board audio, a gigabit LAN connection, two 6Gb/s SATA and one 3Gb/s SATA ports, and two USB 3.0 and six USB 2.0 connections a the rear panel. The front IO panel, meanwhile, features analogue audio in and out, two USB 2.0 ports, a power button, and indicator LEDs for power and drive activity.
The Shuttle SH81R4 is available now from a variety of UK retailers, priced at around the £180 mark including shipping. More details are available on the
official product page.
