Virgin Media has announced that it is increasing its peak broadband speed from 152Mb/s to 200Mb/s, as part of a rebranding exercise dubbed Vivid.
Virgin Media's cable-based broadband service, which uses the third-generation Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS), currently tops out at an impressive 152Mb/s for its top-end customers. Under Virgin Media Vivid, the company has announced today, that will increase to 200Mb/s, with around 90 per cent of the company's customers able to upgrade by the end of this year.
The Vivid branding is to be used, Virgin Media has explained, for all services above 100Mb/s. Customers on the existing 152Mb/s package can upgrade to Vivid 200Mb/s, while those on the mid-range 100Mb/s package can upgrade to Vivid 150Mb/s - or, if they're willing to take the hike, Vivid 200Mb/s. The 50Mb/s package will also have a mid-tier upgrade option before hitting Vivid 150Mb/s, offering a boost to 70Mb/s without the Vivid branding.
'Our message is simple: if you want to be certain that you are signing up to true ultrafast broadband speeds of 100Mb/s and above, Vivid from Virgin Media is the new standard,' crowed Gregor McNeil, managing director of Virgin Media's consumer arm, of the rebrand. 'The speed of a customer’s broadband connection matters; when you have more you can do more.'
Virgin Media has not yet indicated what changes it has made to its network to support the new speeds, nor whether it is using 2006's DOCSIS 3.0 or 2013's DOCSIS 3.1 specification for the new Vivid services. The company has, however, stated that customers will be contacted about upgrading from the 1st of October this year, but has so far been silent on pricing for the new Vivid service.
