Content distribution specialist Akamai's latest State of the Internet report has the UK lagging in the broadband tables, positioning in just 13th place for average connection speed across Europe - behind nations including Romania, Bulgaria, and Lithuania.
Akmai's latest State of the Internet report, covering the first quarter of 2016, suggests that internet connectivity continues to increase in performance globally: average global connection speed, at 6.3Mb/s, is up 12 percent quarter-on-quarter and a whopping 23 percent year-on-year. The UK, though, risks being left behind: with an average speed of 14.9Mb/s and an average peak speed of 61Mb/s, it sits in a distinctly unimpressive thirteenth place in European nations.
Ahead of the UK's mid-table showing are, in order of increasing performance, Lithuania, Belgium, Bulgaria, Romania, Denmark, Finland, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Latvia, Switzerland, and Sweden, with Norway topping the table with 21.3Mb/s average and 69.6Mb/s peak. Akamai also noted that Europe is currently leading in adoption of the IPv6 protocol, with six of the top ten spots being taken by European nations; the UK, however, did not place.
