EVGA has taken the wraps off a revision to its X99 Micro motherboard, dubbed the X99 Micro 2, introducing new Type-C USB ports, more SATA ports, and an improved layout.
Designed to replace the company's existing X99 Micro, the X99 Micro2 is based - as the name suggests - on Intel's X99 Express chipset. Designed for mATX cases, the board features support for three-way SLI, 10 native SATA 6.0Gb/s ports, four DDR4 slots, on-board Intel gigabit networking, eight-channel analogue and optical digital audio, an M.2 Socket M slot supporting 32Gb/s performance, all housed on an eight-layer PCB boasting a six-phase digital voltage regulator module (VRM) system.
The biggest change from the original X99 Micro, aside from the increase in SATA ports, is the inclusion of USB 3.1 Type-C connectivity. The upcoming new standard for peripherals and already featured on the latest laptops from Apple and Google, USB Type-C features a reversible connector and up to 10Gb/s data transfer rates. There's only a single connector for this shiny new standard, however, with the remainder of the board's external USB connectivity being made up of four USB 3.0 and four USB 2.0 ports.
Other features of the board highlighted by EVGA include on-board power, reset, and CMOS clear buttons along with a built-in CPU temperature gauge designed to appeal to overclocking enthusiasts, who may also appreciate the bundled EVGA E-LEET X tuning software. The CPU's independent loading mechanism (ILM) is finished in black nickel, and the on-board audio chip features electrical isolation to improve audio quality.
Pricing for the new EVGA X99 Micro2 has yet to be confirmed, with more information available from the
