Several highly rated apps on the Apple iOS App Store are currently being offered for free, seemingly as a celebration of the App Store's fifth anniversary.
Apps including
Badland,
Infinity Blade II,
Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery EP,
Tiny Wings,
Where's My Water? and
Traktor DJ - a platform for pro DJs, that typically costs $19.99 - are all currently listed as being free, which they have never been before.
Neither Apple nor any app developers have made any statement about the freebies nor has Apple yet responded to any questions about them, but this week marks the fifth anniversary of the launch of the App Store (it's amazing to think it's only that long ago) so this could be part of a celebratory promotion. The store opened on 10th July, 2008 so it would be a little early to start celebrating yet.
We'll be back with more information when we get it. For now, any iOS users may want to jump into the App Store and see what they can find.
Update: The CEO of Touch Press (that makes Barefoot World Atlas) spoke to ABC News and has confirmed that the free apps were indeed part of a fifth-anniversary promotion.
"Barefoot World Atlas went free this morning and will remain so all this week to help celebrate five years of the App Store," said CEO Max Whitby. "Today's promotion is another step down the road to help spread the word [about our apps]."
Intriguingly, Whitby also seemed to indicate that Apple was not compensating companies getting involved in the promotion. "In marketing apps you have to consider the big picture. The loss of one week's paid sales is far outweighed by the wider gain in awareness."
Ths full list of apps included in the promotion is as follows:
Games:
- Tiny Wings
- Infinity Blade II
- Where’s My Water
- Sentinel 2: Earth Defense
- Knots 3D
- Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP
- Badland
Apps:
