Fresh from being ranked as the third largest motherboard manufacturer in the world, ASRock is now reportedly planning an assault on a new market segment: tablets.
According to comments made by vice president of sales Li Jun-Ying, quoted over on DigiTimes, the company is looking to release its own take on the tablet form factor some time before the end of the second quarter of this year.
The company reportedly has a pair of devices in the works; one featuring a 7in display and another with a meatier 10in screen. ASRock is reportedly planning to release the devices around April this year, in order to coincide with the planned launch of Google's tablet-centric build of Android; Honeycomb.
Jun-Ying suggests that the devices will both be powered by Nvidia's increasingly popular Tegra 2 ARM system-on-chip platform, resulting in dual-core processing power and a respectable GPU. Sadly, however, that's unlikely to be enough to differentiate the company's offerings in what is rapidly becoming a crowded market.
Although many of the tablets announced at this year's Consumer Electronics Show were devices running Android 2.3 Gingerbread - or, in some cases, even older versions - April and May are expected to bring a raft of Honeycomb tablets from a variety of manufacturers. Many of these devices will also be based on Nvidia's Tegra 2 platform, and ASRock will have to innovate if it wants its tablets to stand out from the crowd.
