It is normally the other Canadian graphics company that steals all of the thunder with numerous world-firsts. However, today it is the turn of Matrox Graphics - a company that has dropped out of the limelight when they used to be one of the big players in the industry.
The company have just announced that they have launched the World's first video card with a PCI-Express x1 interconnect instead of the more conventional PCI-Express x16 interconnect found on all of today's high-end video cards.
The video card is based on the Matrox Millenium G550 technology and has Dual Head support for using two digital or analogue monitors at the same time. This video card is by no means the world-beater that the GeForce 7800 GTX is at the moment - it's based on DirectX 6 technology so there is no vertex shader support, while it is only capable of writing two pixels per clock.
However, do not let that put you off this video card, as Matrox's 2D graphics quality is about as good as it gets in this industry, making this card ideal for banking and other businesses that will make use of multiple displays. With virtually all system integrators now selling systems featuring motherboards with PCI-Express slots, it could be the ideal choice for office use.
The card will be available in August at an MSRP of $139, which makes it quite an expensive proposition for anyone who is just looking for a cheap video card to drive more displays. However - as we've mentioned - Matrox's 2D graphics quality is of a very high standard and many businesses will buy in to that fact.
Think it's too expensive? Ever used a Matrox card before?
