Lytro has announced that its light field camera will be available to buy here in the UK from 22nd July onwards.
The Lytro Light Field Camera is the world's first camera to use a new image capturing technique that records not just a flat plane of light but a 3D field. The result is that the camera can focus the image after it has taken a shot.
The product has been available in the US for some time now but finally UK users can give the device a go.
Because of its focus-later technology the product itself has a unique design that's more reminiscent of a small telescope, with a fixed lens at the front and tiny screen (128 x 128 pixels) on the back. It also lacks many controls with it being very much a point and shoot device. With dimensions of 112 x 41 x 41mm it's very small too, so makes for a genuinely portable alternative to a conventional camera.
Initial reviews of the product praised the innovative technology and its accompanying software that allows users to simply click on the part of the picture they want in focus. However, also noted was the lack of overall image quality and limited resolution, with jpgs of the final picture coming out at only 1080 x 1080 pixels.
Priced at £399 MSRP for the 8GB version and £469 for the 16GB, the Lytro will be available from John Lewis Dixons Travel and Harrods.
