Razer has announced the refresh of its Blade 14in gaming laptop, adding one of Intel's seventh-generation Kaby Lake processors and a new Ultra HD display option at the top end while retaining a sub-18mm thickness.
Designed to replace the existing Razer Blade 14in laptop, the new model improves on its predecessor in three main areas: CPU, memory, and display. The CPU, to start, has been upgraded to the Intel Core i7-7700HQ running at 2.8GHz, boosting to 3.8GHz, and based on the company's seventh-generation Kaby Lake microarchitecture. The memory, meanwhile, has been upgraded to 16GB of DDR4 running at 2,400MHz, with storage options of 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB, all in the form of M.2 SSDs.
The display is where the buyer gets to make a choice: The new Razer Blade 14in is to be sold in two models, one featuring a Full HD 1,920 x 1,080 display with a matte finish and the other an Ultra HD 3,840 x 2,160 display with capacitive multi-touch functionality. In all cases, the remainder of the specifications remain the same: An Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 GPU with 6GB of GDDR5 graphics memory is installed as standard along with Killer-brand 802.11a/b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 4.1 radios, Thunderbolt 3 via USB Type-C, three standard USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI 2.0 port, audio port, webcam with array-style microphone, and control of the customisable keyboard, trackpad, backlighting, and fan through Razer's Synapse software.
'
The Razer Blade sets the benchmark for performance in thin laptops,' claimed Min-Liang Tan, Razer co-founder and chief executive, at the launch. '
More users embraced this flagship computer model in 2016 than ever before, and we are excited to make it even more available worldwide this year. Beyond gaming, it has been really gratifying to see people enjoying the power and portability of the Blade for video editing, music creation and software development.'
According to Razer's own measurements, the refreshed Blade 14in comes in at 345mm by 235mm and is 17.9mm at its thickest poin. It weighs 1.86kg for the Full HD version and 1.95kg for the Ultra HD version. The Full HD model, meanwhile, is available from the company's official website now starting at £1,799, while the Ultra HD version isn't due to launch until later in the second quarter of the year.
