Samsung and Microsoft have teamed up to produce a Hybriad Hard Drive designed for Windows Vista.
The HHD combines a standard hard drive with flash memory. The idea is that you boot Vista off the flash memory, which will be far faster than booting from the normal disk.
The Korea Times reports that Samsung will be making the drives available later this year, following the successful unveiling of its prototype. Samsung is one of the leaders in flash memory production, and is hoping to boost its sales through the hard drive attachment.
The HHD also requires a software installation called 'ReadyDrive' to work, which we assume moves the bootable bits of the Vista OS onto flash.
No news of the price yet, but we wouldn't expect it to be cheap. The drives are expected to be rolled out in laptops first, where speed has traditionally been a problem.
Intel is also working on a similar technology which will also speed up games.
