Rambus, whose products are more often seen in Playstations than PCs these days, has successfully won a lawsuit claiming Nvidia infringed on its patents and owed it a license fee.
Nvidia
previously claimed this was codswollop and the patents were invalid. Now, it seems, the International Trade Commission (ITC) thinks otherwise.
The ITC filing goes back to 2008 and covers virtually all Nvidia graphics products.
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office may dispute the ruling though - as it's still yet to determine whether the patents are even valid for Rambus to claim full rights to.
Rambus' lawyers haven't stopped though - also named in the suit is HP, ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, Pine Technology (XFX), BFG Technologies, Biostar, Diablotek, EVGA, Gigabyte, Palit and Sparkle. If Rambus does manage to squeeze money out of everyone, then we can expect higher priced products or maybe a few companies on the edge of going out of business.
What are you opinions of the Rambus legal action? Is Rambus within its right to protect its research efforts or is the patent system in need of an overhaul? Let us know your thoughts, in
