Nvidia hardware partner Palit Microsystems has announced a GeForce GTX 1050 Ti graphics card with a difference: It's entirely passively cooled, courtesy of an oversized heatsink fed by a pair of heat pipes.
Designed for those for whom silence is more important than raw power but who would still like to game at Full HD resolutions, the Palit GeForce GTX 1050 Ti KalmX supposedly offers the best of both worlds. The reference cooler design is nowhere to be seen, and neither are the traditional fans; instead, the face of the KalmX card is entirely dominated by a massive dual-slot passive heatsink which extends well beyond the card's top edge - meaning, sadly, the card isn't going to be suitable for installation in the more cramped home theatre cases where it would otherwise prove useful.
Despite being fed by just two copper heat pipes - one to the upper edge of the stack and one to the lower - Palit claims the passive cooler is enough to tame the Pascal-based GPU at the card's heart. The company is also promising that the card will run at full speed from a PCI Express slot with no need for any additional power connections. The GPU, Palit has detailed, runs at a base clock of 1,290MHz and a boost clock of 1,320MHz with a 3,500MHz (7,000MHz effective) memory clock. The card includes dual-link DVI, HDMI 2.0, and DisplayPort outputs, and draws 75W.
While Palit has promised that the card is capable of running '
today's most demanding titles in Full 1080p HD@60 FPS,' it has stopped short of offering benchmark results. It has also proven silent on the running temperature of the card, and it hasn't provided details on any cooling provided to the voltage regulation modules (VRMs) or 4GB of GDDR5 memory on the card. It has, however, promised compatibility with its ThunderMaster monitoring and overclocking utility, suggesting there may be some small amount of headroom left on the card.
