As previously rumoured, Nvidia has announced a laptop GPU built using its new Fermi architecture, in the shape of the GeForce GTX 480M.
Packing 352 shaders and 1GB of GDDR5 it's technically as powerful than the recently announced desktop GeForce GTX 465, but the clock speeds are much lower. The GPU will be clocked at 425MHz, with the stream processors at 850MHz, with 800MHz (3,200MHz effective) GDDR5 on a 256bit interface.
Previously leaked information about the GTX 480M claimed it had a lap-melting "100W" power draw, but Nvidia has not officially commented about the GTX 480M TDP at this time.
Drivers for this new mobile GPU will also be provided via the recently announced Nvidia Verde program, which unifies Notebook and Desktop drivers.
We'll be very interested to see how the GTX 480M stacks up against the mobile ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 1GB, with its "800" (160x5) shaders at 700MHz and 1GB of 4GHz GDDR5.
