EVGA has launched a special edition Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics card, the K|NGP|N Edition - henceforth known as the Kingpin Edition - which introduces a new feature: the ability to pay extra for a higher-binned bit of silicon.
The EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti Kingpin Edition is notable for being the first card to feature the company's ASIC Quality metric. This, the company explains, exposes the binning process for the graphics processor in a way never before seen: buyers will be told of the rated ASIC Quality of their chosen card, and can opt to pay extra to receive a higher ASIC Quality. The higher the quality rating, the higher-binned the silicon - and the more likely it is to sustain an above-average overclock, though the company does warn that the rating 'DOES NOT guarantee any specific overclock performance.'
The Kingpin Edition comes with a variety of changes to the reference design, regardless of the ASIC Quality rating of each particular card: its LEDs can be controlled through the EVGA PrecisionX software, it features a 14+3-phase digital voltage regulation system running a claimed 28 degrees Celsius cooler than the reference design, comes with EVGA's ACX 2.0+ dual-fan cooling system and premium metal shroud, features an on-board EVBot connector, a Kingpin-branded backplate with RGB backlight, a memory and MOSFET cooling plate, on-board thermal sensors, a Probe-It Connector suitable for use with a voltmeter, quick-switch triple BIOS, straight heatpipes, and a single-slot bracket for those who want to swap the bundled cooler out for a waterblock.
The company has confirmed that the card will become available from tomorrow, with prices starting at $849.99 for the lowest-binned "72%+" ASIC Quality and rising to $1,049.99 for the "80%+" ASIC quality models (around £547 and £675 respectively, excluding taxes). UK pricing has yet to be confirmed.
