Asus has launched a new product family, dubbed Strix, which begins with a 6GB GeForce GTX 780 graphics card boasting entirely silent operation outside of gaming and other accelerated tasks and extends to include a matched gaming headset.
Named for the ancient Greek word for 'owl,' Asus has yet to formally launch the Strix family of products but has been teasing them via its
Facebook page. The first, and most interesting, of the Strix family is the Asus Strix GeForce GTX 780 OC Edition 6GB, which - as the name suggests - is an Nvidia GPU paired with a whopping 6GB of GDDR5 graphics memory and a mild factory-applied overclock.
The card's biggest feature is its cooler. While two fans are built in to the card, with a shroud designed to carry through the owl branding from the Strix logo, these only spin when required. While idle or under light GPU load - such as web browsing - Asus claims the fans will be entirely stationary, allowing for completely silent cooling. The company has not yet provided peak volume figures for when the fans do spin up, but it's not expected to be miles away from its existing dual-fan products.
Full specifications, availability and pricing for the board have yet to be announced, but the company has also confirmed its plans to make Strix an all-encompassing brand with a similarly owl-themed gaming headset, the Strix Pro. According to the company's specifications, the Strix Pro headset feature 60mm neodymium drivers in full-size hexagonal ear cushions designed to filter out over 90 per cent of environmental noise. Compatibility with PCs, the Sony PS4 and most smartphones has been confirmed, along with a folding design that make the 320g cans more portable.
Pricing and availability for the Strix products have yet to be confirmed.
