AMD has confirmed a glitch in its latest Catalyst driver bundle that can cause crashes, hangs and the infamous Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) on Windows machines, but promises a fix is in the works.
Released earlier this week and promising a small number of performance and bug fixes, Catalyst 14.9 is available for Windows and Linux as a free upgrade. Sadly, users of the former operating system are reporting that the new driver bundle is causing crashes, hangs and reboot failures - even extending to a bug that can prevent the Catalyst Control Centre software from loading at all.
'We are aware that a small number of users are experiencing the following issues with the AMD Catalyst™ 14.9 driver,' AMD has confirmed on a knowledge-base page about the issues, listing crashes and hangs during driver installations, black or blue screens following the reboot after installation, and failures of the Catalyst Control Centre to load on affected systems. 'We are looking into the issues listed above and will be posting an updated driver as soon as it becomes available.'
Currently, it's not clear what the commonality is between users who are experiencing these issues, nor whether it is restricted to a single graphics card model or GPU family. Those who are finding the new drivers a little buggy are advised by AMD to reboot into Windows Safe Mode, uninstall the Catalyst 14.9 driver bundle and roll back to the last known good release downloadable from the knowledge-base article.
AMD has not yet provided a timescale for an updated Catalyst driver bundle release, nor has it seen fit to remove Catalyst 14.9 from its download site until the issue can be resolved.
