Gigabyte has updated the BIOS's for its most popular Athlon 64 boards to support the new dual-core chips that will be arriving imminently.
Supported are:
- K8NXP-SLI
- K8NE
- K8NS-939
- K8NS
- K8U
These new BIOS' also support the newer Paris and Venice cores.
The Athlon 64 dual core chips are branded X2, and are generally considered to be a better architecture than the recently-announced Intel chips, which come under the Extreme Edition brand. The X2 uses the same Socket 939 chip socket as the previous generation Athlon 64s, maximising the compatibility with existing hardware - as Gigabyte have proved today, all that is needed to support the X2 is a BIOS update.
In contrast, the new Intel chips require a whole new motherboard to support them, with the 945 / 955 chipset supporting them, as well as Nvidia's nForce 4 SLI for Intel platform.
As the Inquirer
point outs this morning, chip analysts have been clamouring to praise the X2 architecture.
Whilst we're still waiting for the official results of the X2 to be lifted from NDA, we can tell you that it's looking very good indeed. In the meantime, you can get the links to the Gigabyte files over at
