So, with the evident success of
NVIDIA's GeForce 7800 GTX launch, enthusiasts are already beginning to anticipate (and speculate) on what form the expected GeForce 7800 GT will take.
There have been two different rumours swimming around so far, and we're not quite sure whether either of them are to be believed at this moment in time as they both came from the same publication.
The first rumour came on the 5th July in a news post on
VR-Zone. They stated that they believe that the card will feature the same pipeline configuration as the
GeForce 7800 GTX - that being 24 pixel pipelines, 8 vertex shaders and 16 pixel output engines (or rasterizers). However, it will have lower clockspeeds rumoured to be 335/1100MHz, with an SRP of $499 - $100 below the GeForce 7800 GTX.
Interestingly, that rumour stated that cards would be available some time during that week of publication. Of course, this was not the case because NVIDIA would have informed us that the launch was imminent and we would have evaluated the video card in readiness for the launch date.
The
second rumour came today, and VR-Zone now believe that the 7800 GT will be clocked at 400/1100MHz with a slight change in the pipeline configuration. The only difference will be that the GeForce 7800 GT will have 20 pixel pipelines, rather than the 24 that are inside the GeForce 7800 GTX.
We find these rumours a little interesting as NVIDIA opted for their second tier product to feature the same pipeline configuration as the high end part in last year's GeForce 6 series. We believe that the pixel shader performance will be around 15-20% slower than GeForce 7800 GTX if these specs are true. It will also be interesting to see whether the seemingly masked pipelines can be re-enabled to deliver performance much closer to the GeForce 7800 GTX.
The rumours are far from concrete at the moment, but we expect that this video card will be released some time in August, with the same widespread availability that the GeForce 7800 GTX had on launch day.
