Gainward have sneaked a 256MB GeForce 6600 GT in to its product line over the last couple of days. The card is known as the Gainward PowerPack! Ultra/1960PCX XP Golden Sample GLH/SLI, and is only available in a matched pair of two cards for use in SLI.
Not only have they released a world-first 256MB GeForce 6600 GT, they've also managed to increase the clock speeds beyond the default 500/1000MHz clocks of the reference 128MB GeForce 6600 GT up to a staggering 540/1150MHz.
The NV43 really benefits from the additional memory bandwidth provided by increasing the memory clocks, as it is somewhat limited by its 128-bit memory interface. However, the GeForce 6600 GT still manages to oust the previous generation's high-end products, even with only 128MB of local memory.
We have no doubts that the additional 128MB of local memory will enable the GeForce 6600 GT to perform at even higher levels of detail in top titles such as FarCry, The Chronicles Of Riddick and Half-Life 2. We also suspect this has been released in the wake of Quake 4 - a title that is set to show NVIDIA leading the benchmark scores. It's an important title for both graphics giants if the title is going to be as popular as we think it will be.
