Foxconn is embracing overclockers around the world with a new BIOS update for its
Mars motherboards. The new update brings support for the 0.5 multiplier increment that is supported by Intel's new Penryn processors. While that may not sound like much, that 0.5 could mean the difference of breaking that gigahertz barrier that you're after or falling just shy of your goal.
“
The 0.5 multiplier increment will give enthusiasts more flexibility when it comes to overclocking, so we should see higher clock speeds running in a stable environment,” says Quantum Force technical director, Peter ‘Shamino’ Tan
Registered users on the Quantum Force website can now
download the G26 Beta bios that has full support of the new increments.
Foxconn is also running a contest for all of you MARS owners out there. During the month of November, the top three overclockers that enter the
Overclock Mars competition will walk away with up to $1,000 in prizes.
While Foxconn may be the first to support 0.5 multiplier increments, expect it from everyone else soon as today marks the launch of Intel's Penryn processors. If you've saved up your cash in anticipation of the launch, you should be able to find the
Core 2 Extreme QX9650 at your favourite retailer. If you're not willing to unload $1,000 (or £650+ for us Brits) on a new processor, you'll be happy to know that the wait for mainstream Penryns won't be much longer - the desktop launch is
still set for January.
