Memory maker Infineon have started shipping DDR3 memory to hardware manufacturers and developers.

DDR3 will, unsurprisingly, be the industry's next RAM, when DDR2 is phased out, in around 2008. The chips currently work at 800MHz and 1067MHz with 1.5 voltage. However, the chips are expected to hit 1600MHz when production gets fully up to speed.

The first time that you and me are going to get to have their mitts on DDR3 RAM is going to be the end of 2006 or the beginning of 2007, when full production gets under way.

DDR3 isn't to be confused with GDDR3, which is a graphics product that features on today's fastest video boards like the 6800Ultra.

Of course, all this comes as AMD are still on DDR1, with Intel frantically trying to get the world up to speed on DDR2. AMD are due to skip to DDR2 tech later this year, although when exactly nobody appears to quite know. AMD were thought to be switching earlier in this year, but, evidently, didn't.

The full skinny is over at X-bit.
