Farewell, Socket 754...

There have been some updated roadmaps published on AMDboard.com that state that all Socket 754 Athlon 64 processors are to be discontinued in Q3 of 2005.

Ever since the launch of NVIDIA's NForce 4 platform, we have had our doubts as to how long Socket 754 would last. None of the major chipset manufacturers have released a PCI-Express chipset for Socket 754, and we understand that none of the big four have intentions of doing so at this time.

Socket 754 has always been let down by its poor memory bandwidth performance, due to it only supporting single channel memory configurations. Socket 939 came to the table to bring the benefits of Socket 940 and Socket 754 together to create the socket of choice for any Athlon 64-based system.

The last order date for Socket 754 Athlon 64 processors is spread over two dates. Distributors can no longer order the higher-end 3700+ and 3400+ processors, as the final order date was set at the 25th March. It is still possible for distributors to place orders for the 3200+, 3000+ and 2800+ processors, and they are available to order until the 15th June.

However, all processor orders will be fulfilled by the 25th September and this is when we will start to see the discontinuation of Socket 754 Athlon 64 processors become apparent in channel etailers.
