Intel is going all-out in its pursuit of the maker market, currently dominated by low-power microcontrollers and ARM microprocessors, with a partnership to bring a maker-themed reality TV show to life with a $1 million top prize.
Announced this week at the Intel Developer Forum, America's Greatest Makers - a working title - is the work of Intel, the United Artists Media Group, and Turner Broadcasting, and is to have Mark Burnett as its producer. Burnett, those who don't watch American reality TV shows may need telling, was the producer of the well-regarded Survivor reality series - and it's that series on which Intel is basing its own show.
Due for broadcast in 2016, the programme will follow a series of real-world makers as they compete for a $1 million top prize by creating innovative devices - powered, one must expect, using Intel's Quark chip, a low-power device it built specifically to address its absence from the burgeoning maker market, which is currently dominated by microcontrollers and microprocessors from rival firms including Atmel and ARM.
Sadly, the competition is not a global one. Entrants must be legal residents of the United States aged at least 15 years, while teams entering must have no more than four core members. The company is looking to focus the show on '
small form factor smart devices that do not require video/camera functionality,' though indicates it may bend these rules for particularly interesting projects, and has asked interested parties to submit a video showcasing their idea.
For readers across the pond, more information and links to submit an entry are available on the
official website.
