triple-core mobile processors, AMD is working on a range of low-voltage desktop processors due for launch in the coming weeks.
Reported over on
Fudzilla, the new Athlon II range starts at a TDP of 45W and rises to 65W for the more powerful models - all designed to reduce the power draw of your desktop system without, in theory, compromising on performance.
The first chip due to hit the shelves is the Athlon II X2 245e dual-core running at 2.9GHz. Drawing a reasonably low 45W, the chip is expected to retail for €79 (£67). Once that's settled into the marketplace, AMD will launch a tweaked version - the Athlon II X2 250e - running at 3GHz and featuring the same power draw.
If you're looking for more power, AMD's Athlon II X2 260 increases the clock speed to 3.2GHz - but also increases the TDP by a whopping 20W to 65W. Interestingly, Fudzilla claims that this processor will be
cheaper than its slower brethren at just €75 (£64), due to its increased power draw and heat output.
For the multi-core enthusiast, the Athlon II X3 415e brings three cores into a 45W TDP package - although the clock speed takes a hammering, dropping to just 2.5GHz. The extra core will set you back, too, with an estimated retail price of €100 (£85). Impressively, the X3 415e will be joined by the
quad-core Athlon II X4 610e which retains the same TDP of 45W, but is expected to cost a whopping €140 (£119).
So far AMD hasn't made an official announcement to confirm or deny Fudzila's claims.
Are there any processors that cry out to you as being a must-have for your next build, or are they all ho-hum - even accounting for the impressively low TDP? Share your thoughts over in
