Cooling specialist EK Water Blocks has announced the launch of a new family of fans, dubbed Vardar, designed specifically for use with liquid-cooling radiators.
Vardar, it would be a disservice not to mention after the time and effort EK clearly put into the introductory section of its press release, is named for '
a type of the cold northwesterly wind blowing from the mountains down to the valleys of Macedonia. It is a type of ravine wind, enhanced by a channelling effect while blowing down through the Moravia-Vardar gap, bringing cold conditions from the north to the Thessaloniki area of Greece. Most frequent during winter, it is blowing in the rear of a depression when atmospheric pressure over eastern Europe is higher than over the Aegean Sea.'
The meteorological lesson aside, EK's Vardar family is claimed to be designed from the ground-up for use with liquid-cooling radiators. Seven fins are designed to provide the high static pressure required to push air through the dense fins of a radiator without sacrificing noise levels, while the motor windings themselves are actively cooled through cut-outs in the fan hub itself to ensure reliable usage over a claimed mean time between failures (MTBF) of 50,000 hours. The fan casing itself is square-edged and designed to seal against the radiator, and comes in single- and two-tone colour choices with pre-sleeved PWM power connectors.
The Vardar family is to feature five 120mm models at launch: a 1,150rpm entry-level model, the EK-Vardar F1-120; the EK-Vardar F2-120, which boosts the top speed to 1,450rpm; the EK-Vardar F3-120, which hits 1,850rpm; the EK-Vardar F4-120 at 2,200rpm; and the oddly named range-topping EK-Furious Vardar FF5-120, which boasts a 3,000rpm top speed. Each comes with black sleeving and a choice of case and blade colour, aside from the FF5-120 which is exclusively available in single-tone black with red sleeving.
Pricing has yet to be confirmed, ahead of a January 2015 general availability - although the EK Webshop is expected to release a 'limited quantity' in mid-December. More details are available in the company's
official announcement.
