Much-traded brand name Atari is making an impressive market volte-face, shifting from its traditional core industry of games into the burgeoning Internet of Things (IoT) with the launch of smart-home products.
While having very little to do with the original arcade pioneer, the Atari brand still carries a certain cachet - despite various efforts from its multitudinous holders to ruin it over the decades. While the name and associated logo are most recognisable to gamers, its current holders have decided the brand needs to branch out into the smart-home market - and, as a result, Atari has partnered with communications provider Sigfox to launch a new range of products.
'Atari, which has disruption rooted in their DNA, was quick to envision the transformative role that the Internet of Things can play in interactive entertainment,' claimed Sigfox chief executive Ludovic Le Moan of the partnership. 'Our network bridges the virtual and physical worlds simply, reliably and inexpensively and this collaboration will launch a new dimension to gaming, while supporting features that are limited only by the imagination.'
While precisely what products are in the pipeline has not been disclosed, Atari has confirmed that it is planning a range of devices covering categories from the home itself through to pets, safety, and the ever-so-vague 'lifestyle.' Using the Sigfox network, these devices will operate entirely independently of a home network and require no configuration: as soon as the battery is inserted, Atari claims, the device will be ready to use.
No release date has yet been provided for Atari's IoT range.
