Starting on September 15, the Sony "Take Back Recycling" Program will officially begin, and you'll be able to recycle any Sony product in the USA for free.
That is, of course, if you live near one of the 75 Waste Management (WM) Recycle America eCycling centres that are spread out across the US.
If any of you have ever recycled any of your old electronics in the States, then you know that you normally get charged for recycling them. This rather bizarre practice often discourages many gamers from doing so. However, free recycling for Sony products could help bring electronics recycling to more people - after all, Sony is one of the largest electronics brands in the world.
If you'd like to drop some of your old PlayStations or Walkmans off, you can find the closest centre by calling 1-877-439-2795. If there's not one near you currently, there might be by next year since Sony has another 75 centers planned, with at least one located in every state. You can always mail your old electronics in if there's not one close enough to you, but expect to pay a nice shipping fee.
Hopefully we'll see a global campaign on the issue from Sony sometime in the future, as electronic recycling is an issue that isn't addressed enough. However, it's probably best that the company is starting in the US, where rather backward policies make it better for everyone to screw the environment.
