Web hosting company
Daily.co.uk has announced that you can now pre-order domain names from it with the adult-only suffix .xxx. These domains ‘
are to be rolled out through several “pre-registration” and reservation phases starting for Daily, with pre-ordering now available.’
The preliminary ‘Sunrise’ reservation phase starts in September and lasts 30 days, and is open to ‘
trademark holders that meet membership requirements of the XXX community, trademark holders not in the XXX community who wish to protect their trademarks (blocking www.theirname.xxx) and also owners of existing pornographic websites recognised by the IANA.’
A further phase scheduled for ‘
Oct/Nov 2011’ will be called ‘Landrush’ and will be open to ‘
any member of the XXX community to register any other domain.’ General release is slated for December this year and prices will start at £49.99 per year to £199.99 per year, depending on the phase of purchse.
The .xxx domain name suffix is a controversial topic for many, as it’s seen by some to legitimise something that shouldn’t be an accepted part of society. However, Daily.co.uk managing director Abby Hardoon says that ‘
Although many may find pornography on the web distasteful, it remains a part of the Internet industry and the founding idea of the .XXX suffix was to try and group together all of the adult websites under this new extension and thus help control access to these websites more easily.
‘Unfortunately today, pornographic material can be set up on any domain suffix (.com, .net etc) and it’s not uncommon that a simple typing error may mean ending up on a pornographic website by mistake.’ Yeah, ‘by mistake,’ sure…
Do you think the .xxx will clean up the adult entertainment industry online, or is it too little too late? Let us know in
