Enterprising modders Zvika Netter and Yuval Tal are working on the ultimate mod for driving game enthusiasts: a full-size car simulators. Dubbed "
Real Virtual Car" (RVC), the boys have chopped up an junked 1997 Renault Megane hatchback and wired the major controls and dashboard gauges to control NASCAR running on a laptop sat in the front passenger seat.
The project echoes the mid-Nineties full-size Ridge Racer arcade setup, where punters sat in a real Mazda MX-5 and the game environment was shown on three massive screens placed in front of the car. RVC features a more cunning solution: the windscreen is white sheet and with an LCD projector mounted in the back seat, the BumperCam visuals are projected directly into the driver's line of sight.
The overall effect is quite remarkable, yet the single most impressive feat is reverse-engineering the speedometer and odometer: I'm not sure how they can extract that data from the game but watching the odometer count out the miles travelled is the ultimate in geek appeal!
There are a couple of videos available on the
RVC Blog page and you will be able to follow their progress as they complete the mod. Personally, I'd love to see them hook this up to an Xbox for some full-size Project Gotham Racing 2 action!
