Manhunt 2 has been hounded by the press ever since it was announced. "
Too much gore! Too much violence!" has been the common decrees from everyone that has tried to prevent the game from being released. Rockstar almost won too, with the game getting an "AO" rating from the ESRB which meant that even if any of the consoles agreed to releasing the game, there wouldn't be many stores that would actually stock it.
Many of us thought that would be the end of the game or, if it managed to come out, it would be a dramatically stripped down version of its former gory self. Well, it is still coming and this time with an "M" rating - in order to get this new rating, Rockstar had to cut out some of the content.
Just what did they cut out? Well,
IGN had the chance to preview both versions of the game and you'll be happy to know that this isn't going to be some watered down version of the original "AO" title.
In fact, not a whole lot has changed in the game; blood splattering, decapitations, and stabbings are all present and correct. You'll still be able to use the environments to kill your enemies in a variety of ways such as using a manhole cover to decapitate a hunter or bludgeon them to death with an enormous variety of blunt objects.
What has changed, however, has been the death strikes. Much like the fatalities in Mortal Kombat, you'll be able to go through a sequence of button presses or motions in order to murder your opponent in a variety of gruesome fashions. In the original, "AO" version of the game, these scenes were as clear as everything else.
Now Rockstar has used a combination of heavy blur effects and darkening the graphics in order to make it nearly indistinguishable. You'll be able to see the basic motions of the murder but IGN states that you'll have a hard time making out just what is happening.
While it may be disappointing to some that the scenes have been edited to the point of not being able to see them, at least the game is shipping without tonnes of content being removed.
