The global economic troubles continue to bite the tech sector, with industry giant Google adding another 200 jobs to the rubbish pile.
According to an article over on vnunet.com, the search giant is looking to add another 200 posts from its sales and marketing divisions to the growing list of layoffs, as it struggles to curb spending and keep the cash flow positive in times of limited spending.
Blaming rapid growth – and poor organisation which resulted in many roles being duplicated throughout the company – the company “informed Googlers that we plan to reduce the number of roles within our sales and marketing organisations by just under 200 globally” yesterday. This figure is in addition to the office closures and job losses the company announced earlier this year.
In a statement on the company's blog, a Google spokesman said that the company recognises that layoffs are “never easy – and we recognise that the recession makes the timing even more difficult for the Googlers concerned” but claims that “we had to restructure our organisations in order to improve our effectiveness and efficiency as a business.”
The bulk of the layoffs are thought to be targeted at US-based employees, and those affected will be offered a sixty day consultancy period during which time they can apply for alternative jobs within the company. Those who are unsuccessful – or who choose not to attempt to remain with Google – will be offered a severance package of unknown value.
Despite the company being one of the select few in the technology sector still posting healthy financial forecasts, it's clear that Google is worried that the current depressed economic climate won't be going away any time soon.
