Microsoft has revealed that its upcoming next generation Xbox will be unveiled on the 21 May at an event in the US.
Invites to the event, taking place in Redmond, Washington, have just been sent out to journalists asking them to join the company at its Xbox Campus "for a special unveiling".
The official announcement of the new Xbox was expected to take place a few weeks later at the gaming convention E3 in Los Angeles - particularly as Sony had revealed its upcoming
Playstation 4 so early on in the year - but this invitation clearly puts paid to that idea.
The invite makes no mention of what the new console will be called but the tag line "a new generation revealed" suggests it may simply go by the name Xbox, rather than the much rumoured Xbox 720. Currently the device is codenamed Durango.
Very little about the device has been leaked so far but the most recent rumours point towards it having an eight-core, 64-bit processor running at 1.6GHz, a Blu-ray drive, 500GB of internal storage and a second-generation Kinect that will be included with all versions of the console. Pricing and a release date are not yet known and are unlikely to be revealed at this initial launch event either.
The event will be hosted by Don Mattrick, president Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft and will take place at 10am (6pm GMT).
