Electronic Arts and Bioware have announced a release dated for the much-anticipated third chapter in the Mass Effect series at E3 2011.

Mass Effect 3 will be released for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on March 6th, 2012.

The announcement was made by Bioware's Casey Hudson, who took to the stage to show off new gameplay footage for the game, including a new melee attack for Commander Shepherd.

The demo also showed on-rails shooting sections, with Shepherd funnelled along tracks as he defeated a giant reaper.

Microsoft previously announced at its own E3 2011 press conference that the Xbox 360 version of Mass Effect 3 will include voice controls via the Kinect motion and voice sensor. Players will be able to select dialogue options by reading them aloud, as well as ordering squadmates around vocally.

Mass Effect 3 will focus on Commander Shepherd's efforts to defeat the Reapers once and for all, after they launch a massive attack on Earth itself. Why? Read our Mass Effect 2 review to find out.
