A hacker group has claimed responsibility for causing connectivity issues with Microsoft’s gaming service Xbox Live.
Whilst an attack has not been confirmed by Microsoft, hacker group Lizard Squad bragged over Twitter that it had hit the service with a distributed denial of service attack. They went on to say that they are planning a larger attack over the Christmas period and that this first outage was a ‘small dose of what’s to come’.
The supposed attack started at around 5:30pm on December 1 and manifested as Xbox 360 and Xbox One users being unable to access Xbox Live with the consoles throwing up an 80151909 error code. The error message specifically warned that the Xbox Live profile was unable to download.
The attack and the connectivity issues have not yet been officially acknowledged by Microsoft’s support site but Twitter filled up with complaints of users being unable to log in to Xbox Live.
Lizard Squad has a history of carrying out similar attacks in the past and in August this year also hit the Playstation Network with a DDoS. The group has also performed hacks on individual games including League of Legends, Grand Theft Auto 5, Destiny and several EA titles.
