The guys picking the competition titles for this year's World Cyber Games are obviously deciding that the best gamers can handle a wide variety of old and new titles, with a game from 2006 and a game from 1997 headlining the list of tournament games for the 2006 championship.
The World Cyber Games, sponsored by Samsung, will consist of 8 different competitions. The titles being played are:
- Starcraft: Brood Wars
- Warcraft 3: Frozen Throne
- Dawn of War: Winter Assault
- CounterStrike 1.6
- Fifa 06
- Need For Speed: Most Wanted
- Dead or Alive 4 (Xbox 360)
- Project Gotham 3 (Xbox 360)
Perhaps the most interesting thing about the lineup is the fact that it is utterly devoid of any modern FPS games. CounterStrike is the old version, and that is the only FPS title there. This will surely make the tournament less attractive to big name FPS veterans like Jonathan 'Fatal1ty' Wendell, who usually wins these things. RTS fans, on the other hand, will have a field day.
There are regional qualifiers being held in Asia, Europe and America, with the winners ending up at a final in Monza, Italy in October. The European qualifier will be at CeBit this year, and we'll be there to cover it in detail.
